De-cluttering - Week 6 - The Refrigerator

I'm not sure if cleaning out the fridge is the same as clearing clutter for the rest of you, but my fridge was overly full and definitely cluttered, so that's the project I chose for this week.

I worked from the top down, taking out everything, shelf by shelf, and washing the shelf before putting anything back on it.  Expired things and left overs that have been left too long got trashed. Dairy, eggs and tall stuff are up top.  My second shelf is split, so you can pull each side out separately to get what's at the back (not that I ever remember to do that).  One side holds spreads and condiments, while the other side holds pickles and yogurt.  The bottom shelf, and the crisper drawers are for fruit and vegetables. 

I use an old ice cube bin to keep all the smaller bits and pieces of veggies in, like half an onion or pepper or tomato, or the smaller left over bits of cauliflower, broccoli, or head lettuce.  It's also a good place for more fragile veggies like zucchini, cucumbers or tomatoes. 

I'm always surprised at how many onion skins gather in the bottom of a crisper drawer, and totally amazed at how much crud can hide underneath there.



I feel like I accomplished something as now I not only have a de-cluttered fridge, I have a clean one.  I found a grapefruit I had totally forgotten I had, and that will be part of tomorrow's breakfast.  It will seem like a reward for a job well done.

  1. I totally count fridge cleaning as decluttering, It's amazing how stuff can get forgetten in the deep dark depths of the back of the fridge! The after shot looks great!

  2. I'm afraid to go looking in my refrigerator. Who knows what unpleasant things I might find? Perhaps that is reason enough that I should do it. *smile*

  3. I too count cleaning the fridge as part of my decluttering. I LOVE when I have a clean fridge. Yours looks fantastic! I love your tip on using the ice cube bin to store more delicate and/or veggie bits and pieces. I'm going to have to do that too.
